A bit about the town

Nestled along the Farmington River, the town of Barkhamsted, and the village of Riverton within has something to offer everyone. History, nature and outdoor activities abound. Riverton appears today just as it must have 100 years ago with its colonial houses, general store, churches, inns, and trees lining the streets. The landmark factory, Hitchcock Chair Company Store, began manufacturing chairs here in 1826. By 1928, the elaborately stenciled chairs and cabinets made in Hitchcocksville, now called Riverton, became famous throughout America. Stop by the Royal Coachman Tavern serving local beer, wine, and fine pub far. The Royal Coachman Tavern is a newly revived tavern in a building that has a history dating back to 1796. The Tavern is named after the Royal Coachman fly.

Hitchcock Chair Company

In 1818, Lambert Hitchcock founded an innovative chair company in the northwestern hills of Connecticut, where he produced his beautiful hand stenciled furniture. Today Hitchcock is run and owned by Gary and Maryanne Hath, Nancy and Rick Swenson producing those same chairs and craftsmanship.
